New York City One Step Closer to Olympic Gold

New York City drew one step closer to hosting the Summer Olympics
for the year 2012 today as the International Olympic Committee named New York as one of the five finalists for the games. Also named were London, Madrid, Paris and Moscow. The final decision will be made early next year.

This, of course, pushes the proposed West Side Stadium one step closer to reality as well, for if there is not an Olympic stadium under construction in New York, there can be no Olympics, and the West Side Stadium is the only game in town.

The stadium opponents have been grasping at straws, trying to show why this effort is futile. They love to trumpet the fact, for example, that there is great antipathy worldwide towards America these days, thereby, in their twisted logic, precluding the New York bid from being successful What they fail to mention, of course, is that, with the exception of a small group of fanatics, that antipathy is focused on the current administration in Washington, DC, not at America itself, and certainly not at New York City.

If you ask anyone on this globe of ours to name the capitol city of the world, the name you will most often hear is New York. There is a love for New York City which transcends politics, a love you can see on the faces of the more than 5 million visitors from overseas New York recieves each year.

Indeed, it is interesting to note that (not that we are taking sides, but these are the facts) the opposition never mentions the fact that the current administration in Washington might be replaced the November, and that such a change might go a long way towards healing the rift that has developed in international relations the past two years, making the likelihood of New York City getting the games far greater than ever.

New York native Olympic hero Bob Beamon also spoke. Mr. Beamon set the record for broadjump at the Mexico City Olympics with an astounding 29 feet 2 1/2 inches, almost two feet more than the world record of the time, considered by many as the single greatest athletic feat ever.
