Mike Lupica A few weeks ago Brian Cashman was supposed to be in trouble, because he was coming to the end of his contract.
Now we're talking contract extension.
As always, the late great Dick Schaap didn't call this Fun City for nothing.
Peter Ueberroth, who was a big guy in sports in the 1980s, obviously needs more to do in his sunset years.
Because Ueberroth, a smart guy who looked like a genius with the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, can't possibly believe that New York City not getting the 2012 Games would be a "blow to the Olympic movement in the United States."
But that's what Ueberroth said this week - on the front page! - as he tried to strongarm Joe Bruno and Shelly Silver.
You know the deal, if you've been following all this.
Silver and Bruno and Gov. Pataki are the three votes on the Public Utilities Control Board, and that board is in charge of a crucial $300 million subsidy of state money for the new West Side Stadium.
For the stadium to get the money, the vote has to be 3-0.
For now Bruno, the Senate majority leader, and Assembly Speaker Silver say they aren't giving anybody any money until they find out whether New York is getting the Olympics.
Mayor Money and his deputy mayor of money, Doctoroff, say that if there isn't a stadium deal in place, New York will never get the Olympics, never never never.
Now Ueberroth writes this letter, one that never addresses the incredible cost of building this stadium for the Jets alone if the Olympics goes to Paris.
Or any justification for it.
So Ueberroth, obviously desperate to have his name in the paper again, comes up as another rich guy shilling for Bloomberg.
He's practically a walking talking editorial, right? |
