3 more unions Michael Saul Three more unions threw their support behind Mayor Bloomberg at a raucous labor rally in midtown Manhattan yesterday. The New York City District Council of Carpenters, the New York State Laborers Union and District Council 9 (Painters) each endorsed Bloomberg for a second four-year term. More than 600 workers attended the rally, held at the Hammerstein Ballroom on E. 34th St. Bloomberg made a dramatic entrance down an aisle lined with supporters, including his eldest daughter, Emma, and his sister, Majorie Tiven. In 2001, Bloomberg had little to no union support - the Correction Officers union being the most notable exception. But four years later, his reelection campaign sports signs that read "Unions for Mike Bloomberg." On Wednesday, Bloomberg was endorsed by District Council 37, the city's largest municipal union with 121,000 members and 50,000 retirees, a stunning loss for his Democratic rivals. On Monday, he was endorsed by the Doctor's Council.
